History
of The National Council of Negro Women:
The National Council of Negro
Women (NCNW) is one of the oldest Civil
Rights Organizations in the United States
of America founded in 1935 by the celebrated
historical figure, Mary McLeod Bethune.
NCNW therefore brings to the table a national
and international network of affiliate agencies,
resources, and contacts for our clients
unmatched by all but a few organizations
of similar stature and reputation. As a
pre Civil Rights Movement organization,
NCNW is steeped in the tradition of arduous
and enduring struggle for educational advancement,
positive social change, unflappable economic
progress, in empowering women who are largely
disenfranchised from the mainstream. In
tandem with the fervent tradition of upholding
the political, social, and economic progress
of African American families everywhere,
NCNW of Greater New York, has prolific expertise
in the area of pregnant and parenting teens
and a eighteen (18) year track for record
of providing services to single parents
throughout Queens.
The National Council of Negro Women of Greater
New York, whose headquarters is located
in the South Jamaica Multi-Service Center
(the heart of South Jamaica), is an independent
non-profit community based organization
registered in the State of New York complete
with its own separate Board of Directors,
staff and 501 c (3) exempt status.
The Southeast Queens/Jamaica
program service area is officially designated
as among the seven most impoverished in
the City of New York. It has for more than
thirty (30) years, been the target of a
myriad of public and private initiatives
aimed to alleviate a clear and classic example
of deprivation, destitution, and deterioration.
For fifteen (15) of these years the NCNW
has provided critical services in the areas
of Comprehensive Case Management for pregnant
teenagers, Family Crisis Intervention, Basic
and Advanced Computer Literacy Skills Training,
and Parent Education/Empowerment Initiatives.
Of paramount importance is
the fact that NCNW is strategically located
in what is considered by many to be the
best and most convenient community service
facility which houses the majority of essential
program linkages under one roof with an
extensive working relationship over the
years. In terms of program efficiency, we
are unmatched with our ability to offer
clients more than twenty thousand square
feet of “one-stop-shopping”
program service platform -- complete with
an array of office space for case management;

and classroom for GED and parenting education.
